My Winter Fitness Hypothesis

Ever since I was a teenager, my eating habits have been ruled by the seasons. Summer has usually found me lean and in shape for bikini season and winter has usually found me a little more flabulous than fabulous, no doubt a product of comfort food, celebration and near-hibernation. But in the past couple years I've noticed a switch- I'm now generally thinner in the winter and less toned in the summer. I thought it odd, and it took a while, but I recently discovered the reason: Every day or two I'm shoveling snow from the sidewalks of two houses. I silently applauded myself for sneaking a workout or two into my weekly routine, behind my own back, so to speak.

I've also been sort of a fair-weather fitness sort of gal, meaning that my workout routines and motivation typically last about a week and then fizzle. Winter is also such a chaotic time, juggling holiday shopping, errands, family gatherings and work, and if you take public transportation, you understand how it's extra taxing, physically. But for me, the payoff has been a sweet little four-pack abdomen and toned legs and thighs (I also run around in snow boots with a platform heel).

I sort of eat like a squirrel or some other small mammal. I eat about six or seven small meals a day, rather than the traditional three large meals. I choose foods high in protein, fiber and antioxidants, such as nuts, trail mix, granola and Power Bars, and dried fruits to keep my energy up and keep my body consistently metabolizing the added calories I consume from sweets and the occasional junk food mini-binge. I also drink lots of water and tea; aluminum and plastic water bottles are really popular and come in some funky styles.

And, of course, I balance out the chaos with some serious relaxation every few days. I just recently learned how to listen to my body and ease the tension and pandemonium that builds up in my muscles and in my mind. I strongly recommend bubble baths, complete with aromatherapy candles, soothing music such as Cat Power, and maybe even a glass of wine. Then, a little pampering- a good moisturizer and a face mask, maybe- and, of course, some comfy pajamas and slippers.

This routine has shown improvements in my skin tone, body condition and mood, and as a model, I consider these things especially important. The bottom line, though, is that every woman should make herself happy first before attending to the needs of others. Self-esteem is so beautiful, and enriches every lifestyle!
